It is that time of year again. The holidays are upon us and for many, that means holiday parties, taking time off to spend with friends and family, and plenty of reasons to celebrate. During this festive time, there are more people out on the roads driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs than any other time of the year. Because of this, DUI arrests usually go up as well. Before you head out to your next holiday event or celebration, take a moment to read through our holiday driving safety tips. If you or someone you know happens to get a DUI this season, contact AGLC DUI School in Duluth.

PLAN AHEAD
If you are getting ready for a night out, it is a good idea to have a plan in place so that you know how you will get home if you plan to drink alcohol. Or, if you choose not to drink, be prepared with a response when others encourage you to “just have one.” This time of year it is easy to get caught up in the festivities and getting a DUI is usually the last thing on anyone’s mind. However, keep in mind that the risk of getting caught will be high as there will be more police out and more checkpoints.
DESIGNATE A DRIVER
If you are going out with friends or family, consider designating a driver that will stay sober and be responsible for getting everyone home safely. Drunk driving or even driving while impaired is unsafe not only for you but for everyone else on the road. While volunteering to be your group’s designated driver may not sound like the most fun thing to do, it just might be the best gift you give them this year.
USE A RIDESHARING SERVICE
Today it is easier than ever to get to where you want to go with the multitude of ridesharing options available. Services like Uber and Lyft are simple to use, widely available, and are less expensive than a DUI. You can make it a plan to take a ridesharing service to your holiday party so you won’t have your car with you and be tempted to drive yourself home. Why take the risk? Even if you have only had one drink, it is best to not drive at all. SafeRide America is another option once drinks are consumed.
STAY THE NIGHT
If you’re going to a holiday party, you might want to consider spending the night at or near the location of the celebration. If you are going to be at a friend’s house, ask if you can have the guest room. Or, if you are going to be at a restaurant, event center, or another place of business, consider reserving a room at a hotel nearby and then take a taxi or rideshare after the party is over.
HOST THE PARTY
Instead of meeting everyone at a restaurant or bar, why not consider hosting a party at your place? Keeping the celebration at home will allow you to partake in alcohol if you so choose, but make sure to take care of those who are attending. You can start by offering plenty of non-alcoholic options and preparing your guest room or couch for people to stay the night. For those who have been drinking that want to go home, schedule a ridesharing service or find a designated driver to take them.
CALL AGLC DUI
The holidays are a fun and festive time of year and alcohol is often involved. Georgia DUI laws prohibit driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 or greater, but a blood alcohol content of .01 to .07 could lead to a DUI Less Safe, which carries the same requirements of a DUI. Georgia DUI laws also prohibits operating a vehicle with ANY illegal drugs in your system. If you or someone you know have been convicted of a DUI, there is a mandatory 20-hour DUI Risk Reduction class and this is where AGLC DUI School can help.
AGLC DUI School is approved by the Georgia Department of Driver Services and you can visit our website for a list of our upcoming courses.
